Blue Kombucha Smoothie with Berries

Kombucha and kefir are both fermented drinks. So why not take advantage of the variety offered by two fermented drinks and mix them together to create a refreshing summer drink? This creamy kombucha-kefir smoothie with berries is quick to prepare and can easily be customized with your favorite ingredients. Whether as a fruity breakfast, a light snack, or a refreshing summer treat, this smoothie recipe will bring variety to your glass.

Kombucha Kefir Smoothie

Ingredients for 1 glass:

  • 1 cup of frozen berries of your choice
  • 150 ml kombucha (Original)
  • 50 ml organic kefir
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 4 ice cubes
  • Garnish of your choice, e.g. lemon slices

Preparation:

Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend on high speed until a smooth, lump-free mixture has formed. Pour into a glass or bowl, garnish as desired, and your delicious, refreshing breakfast is ready to enjoy.

Tip: If you like your smoothie particularly fruity, use raspberries, strawberries, or a mixed berry blend. For a slightly thinner consistency, you can slightly increase the amount of kombucha to taste.

What is kefir?

Kefir is a fermented drink that is traditionally made from milk. Cow's or goat's milk is usually fermented using milk kefir grains, which are colloquially known as kefir mushrooms. This produces a pleasantly tangy milk drink. Kefir fermentation often takes around 24 hours, but can vary depending on the temperature and production method. The kefir grains are then removed and can be reused if properly cared for.

What is kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented tea-based soft drink. Sweetened teas, such as green or black tea, are fermented using a kombucha culture. The so-called kombucha mushroom or SCOBY is a community of various microorganisms, including bacteria and yeasts. During fermentation, components of the tea and the added sugar are metabolized. Depending on the culture and production method, different fermentation products are created, which shape the taste and composition of the kombucha.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Kombucha-Kefir Smoothie

What does a smoothie with kombucha and kefir taste like?

The smoothie tastes fruity and slightly tangy. The berries provide a sweet, fresh note, while the kombucha, kefir, and lemon juice round off the aroma. The taste also depends on the type of berries and kombucha used.

Can I use other berries for the kombucha smoothie?

Yes, you can use strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or a mixed berry blend. Frozen berries make the smoothie particularly cool and ensure a creamy consistency.

Can I also prepare the smoothie without milk kefir?

Yes. If you do not want to use milk kefir, you can replace it with a plant-based alternative, for example. The taste and consistency will change depending on the product.

What is the difference between kombucha and kefir?

Kombucha is made by fermenting sweetened tea using a kombucha culture. Traditional milk kefir, on the other hand, is made by fermenting milk with milk kefir grains. Both drinks are fermented, but they differ in their base, cultures, and taste.

Can I prepare the kombucha-kefir smoothie in advance?

The smoothie tastes best when freshly prepared. If you want to store it briefly, place it in a sealed container in the refrigerator and consume it as soon as possible. Since kombucha may contain carbonation, you should be aware of possible pressure buildup when blending and sealing.
